SELECTION GUIDE

SD Card Connector (Socket) Selection Guide

Choosing an SD card socket comes down to 4 values: bus generation, profile height, eject mechanism and durability class. The KINGCONN standard SD catalog lists 15 models at 2.85mm and 2.95mm profile with 5,000 or 10,000 mating cycles; the SD 4.0 (UHS-II) series adds a second contact row at 1.2mm pitch in 2.90mm to 3.20mm profiles. Card dimensions and the 9-pad contact assignment follow the SD Association specification; every KINGCONN value comes from the drawing published on the part page.

Standard SD or SD 4.0 (UHS-II)?

The first fork is the bus generation. The standard SD series covers the single-row interface used by POS terminals, printers, instruments and dashcams; the SD 4.0 series adds a second contact row at 1.2mm pitch for UHS-II cards — choose it when the host controller has UHS-II lanes. For the PCIe generation see the SD Express socket guide, and for the pinout and bus table see SD card socket types.

Eject mechanism: what the user does to get the card out

MechanismHow it worksWhen to use it
Push-pushinsert to latch, push again to ejectuser-swapped slots; no ejector-lever clearance
Push-locklatched after insertion, push to releasehigh-vibration machines where the card must not walk out
Normal / simplecard pulled straight out, no eject mechanismfactory-fitted cards; shortest body, lowest cost
Reversecontacts face the board, card face flippedsaves a board flip when the panel opening is on the other side

The card standard says nothing about the mechanism, so this is entirely a product decision. Push-push is the default for a user-facing slot. Push-lock suits equipment that vibrates. A normal (simple) socket has the fewest moving parts and the shortest body, which is why it survives in cost-driven designs where the card is fitted once.

Profile height and board orientation

Catalog profiles for standard SD are 2.85mm and 2.95mm; SD 4.0 models span 2.90mm to 3.20mm. If the socket sits against the enclosure opening, fix the insertion depth early as well — it sets the front-panel cut-out. Reverse-type models flip the card orientation so the panel opening can sit on the other side of the board.

Durability class

The catalog lists both 5,000 and 10,000 cycle classes. Specify the high class for dashcams and field loggers where the user pulls the card; a configuration card fitted at assembly does not need it.

Standard SD models use 1.00mm contact pitch (2.50mm on specific rows), copper-alloy contacts and UL94V-0 housings, RoHS compliant, and each published value carries its source drawing number.

FAQ

How do I choose an SD card socket?
Fix 4 numbers: the bus generation (standard SD is a single contact row; SD 4.0 adds a second row for UHS-II), the profile height (2.85mm and 2.95mm in the standard SD catalog), the eject mechanism (push-push, push-lock, normal or reverse) and the durability class (5,000 or 10,000 cycles). Height and generation first, mechanism after.
How many contacts does an SD card socket have?
A full-size SD card has 9 pads per the SD Association specification. The socket terminal count is not always the same: versions with card-detect or write-protect switches carry terminals the card never touches.
Are SD and microSD sockets interchangeable?
No. A full-size SD card is 32.0 × 24.0 × 2.1 mm and microSD is 15.0 × 11.0 × 1.0 mm, with a different pad order. Accepting both needs 2 sockets or an adapter shell.
What is a reverse-type SD socket?
A version with the contacts facing the board and the card orientation flipped. When the panel opening sits on the other side of the PCB, a reverse socket avoids flipping the board or adding an adapter. 7SDCN-F0-0033 and 7SDCN-F0-0026 are reverse types in the catalog.
Which durability class should I specify?
Specify 10,000 cycles wherever the user swaps the card (dashcams, field data loggers, POS). A card fitted at assembly and left alone is fine at the 5,000 class. The rating is on each part drawing.
