APPLICATION GUIDE

Memory Card Sockets for Dashcams, POS & Data Loggers

In a dashcam, POS terminal or data logger the memory card is a consumable and the socket is not — so the initial filter is the durability class, not the price. KINGCONN publishes 5,000 and 10,000 cycle classes across 19 microSD models and 15 full-size SD models; anything the end user touches should be specified at 10,000.

What each application actually needs

ApplicationHow the card is handledSpecifyThe trap
Dashcamthe user pulls the card for every incident10,000 cycles + push-push + card detectheat: a car interior runs far above room temperature
POS / tillconfiguration card changed rarely, machine never stops10,000 cycles + push-lockthe card must not walk out
Industrial data loggerfield staff swap cards wearing gloves10,000 cycles + push-pushejection needs a positive feel
Industrial / vision cameracard rarely moves but write volume is high5,000 cycles is enoughthe issue is bus generation and signal integrity

Push-push plus card detect

Push-push latching needs no ejector-lever clearance and works with gloves on. A card-detect switch lets firmware log "card removed" rather than "card failed" — in a dashcam that difference is the warranty conversation. The switch changes the terminal count, so decide it before layout.

Height options for slim housings

microSD profiles run 1.15mm to 1.68mm; full-size SD is 2.85mm and 2.95mm. For the newer media see the SD Express socket guide, and for the mechanism comparison see SD card socket types.

Sockets for user-swapped media

microSD and full-size SD sockets suited to user-swapped media: push-push, card detect, push-lock and reverse types.

FAQ

What should a dashcam memory card socket specify?
Specify the 10,000-cycle class, a push-push mechanism and a card-detect switch, and check the operating temperature covers a hot car interior. The card is a consumable; the socket is not — it has to outlive many cards.
Why does card detect matter so much in a dashcam?
With card detect, firmware can tell "card removed" from "card failed". After an incident that distinction is the difference in a warranty or liability conversation; without the switch the recorder only knows it cannot read.
Is a POS socket the same as a dashcam socket?
The durability class is the same, but the mechanism is often push-lock instead: a till never stops, and the card must not be knocked out. A dashcam is the opposite — the user wants a fast one-handed eject.
What actually fails in a card socket?
3 things: mating cycles beyond the rated class, contacts scraped by a card inserted at an angle, and solder joints torn by side load. The first 2 are solved by durability class and mechanism, the third by choosing a part with locating bosses or through-hole legs.
microSD or full-size SD?
It depends on the user. Full-size SD is easier to handle with gloves and harder to drop, which suits vehicle and industrial use; microSD saves board area and enclosure height in slim devices. KINGCONN publishes both (19 microSD models, 15 SD models).
