Connectors for Rugged & Industrial Embedded Systems

In industrial and embedded equipment the connector, not the card, sets the maintenance life — so selection starts from the durability class and the mechanism. The logic below comes from the questions industrial PC and instrument makers actually ask us, and every value cited is on a KINGCONN part drawing.

4 subsystems, 4 different selection rules

SubsystemPartsSpecifyWhy
Removable storagemicroSD / SD sockets10,000 cycles + card-detect switchfield serviceable; firmware separates "no card" from "card failed"
Compute and wireless expansionM.2 / Mini PCI / DIMMstack height from component clearance60-cycle sockets are fine; these are not mating parts
Cellular connectivityNano / Micro / Mini SIM socketshinge or push-push with CD pinSIMs get reconfigured, so the mechanism must reopen reliably
Module to carrier boardboard-to-board (BTB)0.4–1.27mm pitch, 0.8–15.0mm mated heightthe backbone of a carrier architecture; fix height first

Removable storage: durability class first

KINGCONN microSD sockets are published at 5,000 and 10,000 cycle classes. Use the 10,000 class for field-serviceable storage, and choose a part with a card-detect switch so firmware can separate "no card" from "card failed" — that is the difference between a site visit and a remote diagnosis. See the microSD selection guide.

Expansion: M.2 and the legacy sockets

The catalog covers M.2, Mini PCI and DIMM sockets for compute and wireless modules, plus Nano / Micro / Mini SIM sockets for cellular equipment. Module sockets are not mating parts: 60 cycles is the right order for them.

Module to carrier: fine-pitch board-to-board

Carrier-plus-module architectures mate over BTB: pitches from a space-saving 0.4mm to a forgiving 1.27mm, mated heights from 0.8mm to the 15.0mm spacer class — see the BTB selection guide.

Parts that end up on an industrial board

A typical industrial bill of materials: microSD with card detect, M.2 sockets, Mini PCI, SIM sockets, fine-pitch and spacer-class BTB, and a SO-DIMM socket.

Supply and verification, on industrial terms

Every published specification value carries its source drawing number, so your hardware team can verify against the original drawing before layout. KINGCONN designs and tools in Taoyuan with a quality system registered to ISO 9001:2015 and supports ODM customisation, including long-life variants of catalog parts. Send the application and requirement to service@kingconn.com.tw.

FAQ

How does industrial connector selection differ from consumer?
What sets the maintenance life is the connector, not the card. Industrial equipment serves for years in the field: storage cards get swapped and SIMs get reconfigured, so the first thing to read is the durability class and the mechanism, not the unit price.
What storage socket belongs on an embedded board?
Specify the 10,000-cycle class for field-serviceable storage and choose a part with a card-detect switch — that is the difference between a site visit and a remote diagnosis. See the microSD selection guide.
Which connector does a carrier-plus-module architecture use?
Board-to-board. Pitches run from 0.4mm where space is tight to 1.27mm where alignment must be forgiving, with mated heights from 0.8mm to 15.0mm spacer class. Fix the height from the mechanical stack first — see the BTB selection guide.
Which compliance documents apply?
UL94V-0 flammability rating, a RoHS declaration, and the source drawing number behind every specification value. KINGCONN designs and tools in Taoyuan with a quality system registered to ISO 9001:2015.
What if the catalog durability is not enough?
An ODM route exists, including long-life variants of catalog parts. Send the application, environment and target life to service@kingconn.com.tw — see the ODM custom connector guide.
