SELECTION GUIDE

Smart Card Connector Selection: 100,000-Cycle Readers

Smart card reader contacts live the hardest life of any card connector — inserted by the public every day for years — so the value that matters is durability: KINGCONN smart card parts are published at 100,000 minimum mating cycles. Catalog models are 2.54mm contact pitch at 1.4mm and 3.5mm profile. Contact numbering follows ISO/IEC 7816-2; KINGCONN values come from the part drawings.

Footprint and profile

The low-profile version suits slim terminals and embedded reader modules. Check the card insertion geometry against the enclosure early — the slot sets the front-panel opening, and that is not a decision you can revisit after tooling.

Card detect and switch polarity

Most reader designs need to know whether a card is seated. Normally-closed and normally-open switch versions both exist; firmware logic follows the part, so confirm the switch type on the drawing during selection. For the C1–C8 contact functions see the SIM card pinout guide, which shares the same standard.

Materials and RFQ

Housings are LCP or high-temperature thermoplastic rated UL94V-0 with phosphor bronze contacts, RoHS compliant, and every published value carries its source drawing number. See the Smart series page, or send your reader type, actuation count and profile limit to service@kingconn.com.tw.

FAQ

How does a smart card connector differ from a SIM socket?
The contact definition is shared (C1–C8 per ISO/IEC 7816-2), but the duty is not: smart card reader contacts are published at 100,000 minimum mating cycles, while a SIM socket is fitted once and rarely touched. Card size and mechanism differ too — they are not interchangeable.
What durability should a card reader specify?
For public readers (POS, access control, ticketing) specify the 100,000 class directly. The arithmetic is simple: insertions per day × years in service, and that number is usually far beyond the class of an ordinary memory card socket.
Which contacts does an IC card connector use?
ISO/IEC 7816-2 defines C1 to C8: C1 VCC, C2 RST, C3 CLK, C5 GND and C7 I/O are the basic 5. C4 and C8 carry USB data lines in later specifications and C6 carries SWP for NFC.
Normally-closed or normally-open card detect?
A normally-closed switch conducts with no card and opens on insertion; normally-open is the reverse. Firmware logic has to follow the part, so confirm the switch type on the drawing during selection rather than discovering the inverted polarity later.
Which part suits a slim terminal?
The 1.4mm profile version, for example 7SCCN-F0-0003. Check the card insertion geometry against the enclosure early — the slot sets the front-panel opening and that is hard to change later.
