SELECTION GUIDE

USB Type-C Connector Selection: Pin Count and Durability

A Type-C receptacle is selected on contact count, mounting style and durability. The USB-IF Type-C specification defines 24 contact positions in mirrored halves so the plug is reversible; KINGCONN publishes 24, 16, 14 and 6 position receptacles at 0.50mm, 0.70mm and 0.85mm pitch with 3,000 to 10,000 mating cycles. Every value comes from the drawing on the part page.

Contact count: how much of Type-C do you actually need?

PositionsWhat is on themWhat it serves
24 pinfull Type-C: SuperSpeed pairs, CC1/CC2, SBU1/SBU2, VBUS, GNDUSB 3.2 / USB4, DisplayPort alt mode, full PD
16 pinSuperSpeed pairs dropped, CC and USB 2.0 keptcharge-and-USB-2.0 products; simpler routing, lower cost
14 pinfurther reduced, charging orientedpower-only or cost-critical designs
6 pinpower and essential contacts onlymodules that just take power

Dropping the SuperSpeed pairs is the single biggest simplification available in a Type-C design: it removes the controlled-impedance routing, the length matching and the return-path discipline that the high-speed pairs demand. If the product charges and talks USB 2.0, a 16-position part does the job at lower cost. For the connector family comparison see USB connector types.

Mounting and retention

MountingWhat it isWhen to use it
Vertical SMTreceptacle stands upright on the boardsmall board area, cable from above; e.g. 7USB31-F0-0030 at H15.0mm
180° mid-mountreceptacle sits in a board cut-out, flush with the edgethinner enclosure; e.g. 7USB31-F0-0002 at H6.5mm
SMT + DIP hybridsignal pins SMT, shell legs through-holebest pull-out resistance; e.g. 7USB31-E0-4001
Full DIP, dual rowall through-holehand assembly or serviceability; e.g. 7USB31-F0-0026

Type-C ports fail mechanically far more often than electrically: the user levers the plug, and the load goes into the shell solder joints. Parts with through-hole shell legs or locating bosses survive that better than all-SMT parts. This is a selection decision, not a layout fix.

Materials and verification

Housings are LCP rated UL94V-0 with stainless steel shells; contacts are copper alloy. RoHS compliant, and each part page cites the source drawing number. Browse the Type-C series or send your contact count, mounting style and current requirement to service@kingconn.com.tw.

FAQ

How many pins does a Type-C receptacle have?
The full specification is 24 contact positions (USB-IF Type-C), arranged as mirrored halves so the plug works either way up. Products do not always need all of them: KINGCONN publishes 24, 16, 14 and 6 pin versions, and a charge-and-USB-2.0 product is fine at 16.
How do I select a Type-C connector?
Fix 3 things: the contact count (do you need SuperSpeed and alt mode), the mounting style (vertical SMT, mid-mount, SMT+DIP hybrid or full DIP) and pitch plus durability (KINGCONN publishes 0.50, 0.70 and 0.85mm at 3,000 to 10,000 cycles). Contact count first — it sets the routing complexity.
Why does Type-C need 24 contacts?
Because the plug is reversible. The pairs, VBUS and GND appear on each half, plus CC1 and CC2 for orientation and power-delivery negotiation and SBU1 and SBU2 for alternate modes. The mirroring is where the position count comes from.
What is the difference between mid-mount and top-mount?
A mid-mount receptacle drops into a board cut-out so the port is flush with the board edge and the product can be thinner; the cost is the cut-out and its tolerance affecting alignment. A top-mount part needs no cut-out but the enclosure has to clear the full connector height.
Is Type-C durability sufficient?
The KINGCONN Type-C family publishes 3,000 to 10,000 mating cycles. Specify the 10,000 class for phones and tablets plugged daily; fixed installations that are rarely unplugged are fine at 3,000.
