TECHNICAL GUIDE

PCB Connector Types: Board-to-Board, FPC / FFC, Card-Edge and Board-End I/O

"PCB connector" covers 5 kinds of part: board-to-board, FPC / FFC, wire-to-board, card-edge and board-end I/O — and every one of them is selected on the same 3 numbers: pitch, mated height and position count. This page sorts the kinds, shows where those numbers live on a drawing, and maps each kind to the KINGCONN series that carries it. All values are taken from the series drawings on this site.

How to read a connector drawing

ValueWhere it is on the drawingWhat it decides
Pitchon the contact dimension lineplug and receptacle must match; finer saves area but demands placement accuracy
Mated heightthe side viewdecides what fits between the boards; unchangeable once the enclosure is fixed
Position countmodel description or parameter table1 housing often covers several counts; the exact count is in the part number
Mountingbottom view and pad drawingSMT, DIP or hybrid; hybrid legs resist pull-out best
Durabilityspecification table60 cycles for a module socket, 10,000 for a card socket — 2 orders of magnitude apart

Pitch is the centre distance between adjacent contacts. Traditional through-hole headers are 2.54mm (0.1 inch); surface-mount PCB connectors are far finer. KINGCONN board-to-board parts list 0.40, 0.5, 0.8 and 1.27mm pitches, FPC connectors 0.5 and 1.0mm, and M.2 card-edge sockets 0.50mm. Plug and receptacle pitch must match.

Mated height and position count

Mated height on a board-to-board pair is the distance between the boards once fully mated — it decides whether components fit between them. KINGCONN BTB models publish 0.80, 5.0, 10.0 and 15.0mm. For FPC the equivalent is the connector height above the board (1.0, 1.75, 2.5mm); for M.2 it is the module stack height (3.2, 4.0, 4.2mm). Position count follows the interface: BTB from 10 to 200, FPC 4 to 33, a keyed M.2 socket 67 contacts.

Board-to-board at 0.4mm and 0.8mm and spacer class, FPC at 0.5mm and 1.0mm, card-edge M.2 / Mini PCI / DDR5 SO-DIMM, board-end Type-C and RJ45, and a finished cable assembly.

Which KINGCONN series belongs to which kind

Board-to-board: BOARD TO BOARD. FPC / FFC: FPC. Card-edge: M.2, Mini PCI, DIMM (DDR). Board-end I/O: Type-C, RJ45, HDMI, SATA. Cable: Cable. The selection detail for each is in the BTB guide, the FPC guide and the M.2 key guide.

FAQ

What types of PCB connector are there?
5 kinds: board-to-board (BTB), FPC / FFC, wire-to-board, card-edge (M.2 / Mini PCI / DIMM) and board-end I/O (USB, RJ45, HDMI, SATA and memory card sockets). "PCB connector" is a purchasing term, not 1 product — it covers everything soldered to a printed circuit board.
Board-to-board or FPC?
Boards fixed parallel or at right angles at a fixed distance: board-to-board. Boards that move relative to each other, sit at a variable distance or must pass through the enclosure: a flex cable and an FPC connector.
What are the 3 numbers that matter on a connector drawing?
Pitch, mated height and position count. Pitch is on the contact dimension line, mated height in the side view, position count in the model description or parameter table. Every KINGCONN part page carries the drawing and transcribes these values.
Why is 2.54mm such a common header pitch?
2.54mm is 0.1 inch, the standard grid of the through-hole era, so breadboards, ribbon cable and a huge installed base follow it. Surface-mount PCB connectors are far finer — KINGCONN BTB starts at 0.40mm.
Why does 1 series carry so many position counts?
Because 1 housing and contact tool can produce several lengths. The count is in the part number: the BTB family runs 10 to 200 positions and FPC 4 to 33. A late signal addition usually stays inside the same footprint.
